Clearing the Clutter
Guests get a great first impression when they visit these homeowners. They created a warm and cozy entry by assembling two pieces of furniture to fill the area.

Catching the Clutter

Any entry to a home provides an introduction to the personality of the family who lives there. A few months after these homeowners settled into their new abode, they realized that many people came in through the back door. So they decided to spruce up the area. It definitely needed some character, but more than that, it required some functional furniture and storage. This family ended up with both. Lowe's is happy to provide this information as a service to you.

Seating With Storage

These homeowners knew they wanted a bench for sitting and hidden storage. So they searched for a 4' bench that would hold plenty of items. They found one that was non-assembled and unfinished. Once the bench was assembled, the wife took several tips from her sister, a designer, and went to work on the desired antique look.

Step 1: Assemble the bench according to the manufacturer's instructions. Then rub completely with a wood finish and sealer. Stain the piece the desired shade. (Tip: We used a one-step stain and polyurethane, antique walnut satin.) Allow to dry.

Step 2: Study an old piece of wood, and examine the natural scratches, wormholes, and worn areas. This will give you a mental picture of what to emulate on the bench.

Step 3: Start scratching, hammering, and even drilling little wormholes with a small drill bit. Work around the whole bench to avoid wearing out any one area too soon. You also can use metal spatulas or heavy pieces of chain to age the wood. (This is a nice way to relieve some tension.)

Step 4: Rub more finish in areas where the grooves show through to the natural wood.

Step 5: When you are satisfied with the look of the piece, rub paste wax all over the bench using soft cotton rags.

Topping it Off

The bench looked wonderful, but with the 9' ceilings, the homeowners had one large blank wall. They needed to add something to hang things from, preferably with a shelf. They had seen some mantel shelves, but none had the right proportion. No problem. This couple decided to design one to fit the space; it would serve both decorative and functional purposes. Cabinet knobs were added for hanging jackets, backpacks, and other items.

How-To Step
This mantel shelf was custom designed to fill a large wallspace. When combined with the bench, it brings weight and proportion to the space.

Step 1: Cut plywood down to desired size to create base. Our overall size is 48" wide x 28" high.

Step 2: Cut the beaded board down to the exact size of the plywood. Match the edges, and attach with wood glue. Clamp until dry.

Step 3: Draw a line across the board 7" from the bottom on the front and back sides.

Step 4: Cut down the 1 x 6 board to 48" long to be used for the shelf.

Step 5: Drill pilot holes for #10 wood screws every 6" along the line on the back of the plywood.

Step 6: Apply wood glue across the edge of the shelf board, and attach to base, centering on the line.

Step 7: Holding the shelf board centered on the line, attach with screws from the back into the edge of the board.

Step 8: Miter the outer edge, and affix smaller crown moulding to the front and edge of the shelf board.

Step 9: Miter the outer edge, and attach larger crown moulding to the top of the main board.

Step 10: Apply stain and polyurethane to the whole mantel shelf, and use some of the same techniques suggested for aging the bench.

Brass hardware knobs provide the finishing touch. Now the completed mantel shelf displays an array of household items.

Step 11: Once you reach your desired finish, drill five holes for the hardware to attach knobs below the shelf.

Step 12: Attach two D-rings on the back side of the mantel shelf as hangers and use 100-pound hangers to secure it to the wall.

High Traffic

The homeowners opted for a bound sisal area rug to handle the heavy foot traffic. The hat rack from their personal collection of folk art completes the room. They love their new space and consider it a lot more than a mudroom. It catches the clutter before it makes its way into the house.
