Steps to create a Puppet Theater
Puppet theater.

A 20-pocket shoe organizer offers
storage for the puppets when offstage.

Place a dry-erase board inside so actors will never forget their script. Paint the edges purple to match the curtains and polka dots.

Step 1: Place the screen door facedown on a flat surface. Using a putty knife, pry off the moulding that holds the screen in place, working from the ends to the center. Remove the screen. Cut the side moulding pieces in half. Staple the moulding back into the same place at the top of the door and the top half of each side. (Note: The bottom half will be covered with a birch board.)

Step 2: Attach a lauan door to each side of the screen door using 1 1⁄2" zinc hinges. Place three hinges, evenly spaced, on each side.

Step 3: Lightly sand doors and pine brackets. Apply a coat of primer, and allow to dry. Paint pieces with American Tradition, Yellow Bouquet #92-2B, and allow them to dry. Apply a second coat of paint, if needed.

Step 4: Unscrew the keyhole fasteners in the pine brackets. Turn the fasteners upside down, and screw them back into place.

Step 5: Attach the pine brackets to the bases of the doors to act as feet. This will secure the structure. Place one foot on each side of the screen door and one each on the outer sides of the lauan doors. Attach the feet using 1" wood screws.

Step 6: With a small brush, paint polka dots on the lauan doors using American Tradition, Spring Violet #92-21A. Allow to dry.

Step 7: Cut a 4' square birch board to 32" x 36". (Note: The wood-cutting area at Lowe’s can trim the board to size for you.) Sand the edges of the board until smooth. Prime the board. Once it’s dry, spray it with chalkboard spray paint. Allow to dry, and then apply a second coat.

Step 8: Cut the rolled cork into one piece measuring 24" x 36", one piece measuring 12" x 24", and two pieces measuring 4" x 12". Arrange these pieces so that they cover the other side of the birch plywood. Secure with glue. Weight the board with heavy objects and allow the glue to dry.

Step 9: Using a staple gun, attach the birch board to the screen door along the edges only so that the chalkboard is facing outward (staples in the center of the board will piece through to the other side of the wood). Place a piece of fabric cut to size over the cork, and attach the edges using a staple gun. Use a glue gun to attach ribbon around the edges to cover up the staples.

Step 10: Paint the edges of the dry-erase board the same color as the polka dots. After the paint dries, mount it on the back side of the left lauan door following the manufacturer’s directions. Attach the shoe organizer to the back side of the other door.

Use fabric and sash café rod for the curtains.

Step 11: To make curtains, cut the fabric to the desired length and width. Create a pocket at the top for the curtain rod, and hem the edges with a glue gun or sewing machine. Attach a round sash café rod to the top of the screen door. Hang curtains.
