Instructions

General: Set all nails. Fill nail holes with wood filler and sand flush when dry. Remove excess glue from exposed surfaces.

Step 1: Cut all lumber per the Cut List

Step 2: Place the plywood piece on a flat surface. Arrange the two supports on the back of the headboard, using a framing square to measure 2 1/8" in from the sides and with 12" of each support exposed to serve as the legs of the headboard (see illustration). Attach the supports with 2 1/2" screws. Turn the assembly over.

Step 3: Place the upper and side trim pieces on the front of the assembly as shown in the illustration, with outer edges flush. Attach the trim pieces using 1 1/4" finishing nails.

Step 4: Select a spot to place the decorative medallion, then attach it to the front of the assembly with wood glue. (We centered it laterally and placed it one-third of the way from the top of the headboard based on the height of the mattress.) Allow to dry.

Step 5: Attach the side and upper edging to the exposed edges of the plywood along the sides and top of the assembly. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for applying the veneer.

Step 6: Sand smooth all flat surfaces and wipe them clean. Prime the entire assembly, and allow to dry. Paint the entire assembly, and allow to dry.

Step 7: Using the pouncer brush, apply color glaze along the edges and crevices of the trim and the medallion. Rub off excess glaze with the rag rolling cotton. Repeat the process until you create the desired effect—the more times you apply glaze, the more defined the lines and curves will be. Apply the clear protective glaze to the entire headboard when the previous coats are dry.

Installing the Headboard
To secure your custom headboards to the bed frames, drill two 1/4" holes on each support. Exact placement of these holes will depend on your individual bed frame. Use carriage bolts, flat washers, and hex nuts to fasten the headboards to the bed frames through the drilled holes and the appropriate openings in the frames.
