A Perfect Fit

Nooks and niches not only add character to a room, they are often the perfect places for displaying and storing special items. Here is a simple and creative solution for filling a dormer window with a bench that provides display and storage space as well as a great spot to curl up and read a good book. Finish the bench with a paint technique that complements your decor.

(Note: Attach all plywood pieces with 6d finishing nails and aspen strips with 3d finishing nails. Countersink nail heads.)

HowTo - Steps

Detail for placement of B1 & B2. Step 1: Cut all wood pieces according to the cut lists.

Step 2: On parts A1 and A2, measure and mark a line at 3" and one at 3 3/4" from one short end of each piece with a pencil. Measure and mark a line at 4" and one at 4 3/4" from the other short end of each piece.

Step 3: Attach parts B1 and B2 where the lines were drawn on A1 and A2, forming a box. The board installed at the 3" mark will form the seat.

Step 4: Mark the centers of B1 and B2. Nail through B1 and B2 to attach part C at this mark as the center divider.

 

Step 5: Center and attach D1 and D2 underneath the seat.

Step 6: Attach the aspen strips. First, secure the strips to the front and back of A1 and A2, then to the front and back of B1 and B2. Next, attach them to the front and back of C, then to the top of A1 and A2.

Step 7: Fill all nail holes with paintable wood putty, and sand pieces smooth.

Step 8: Stain or paint the bench to match your decor.
