Stippling Methods
Stippling.
Stippling on technique

There are two methods of stippling:

  • Stippling paint off involves actually removing some of a second coat of paint to allow the base coat to show through.

  • Stippling paint on involves dabbing paint directly on the wall.

The best way to decide which method you prefer is to practice on a piece of cardboard.

Ready, Set, Go
  1. Remove all furniture from the room.

  2. Cover the floors and any furniture that can not be removed with dropcloths. Cover the moulding and any other areas that will not be painted with painter's tape. If you have cracks or holes, repair them. Apply your base coat of paint and allow it to dry completely.

Tip: When it is humid or cold, stains and paints dry slowly.

Stippling Paint Off

Stippling paint off is much easier if you work with a partner, one person in charge of glazing, and the other in charge of stippling. Each person should do the same task throughout the process to keep the pattern uniform.

  1. Use a paint roller to apply a thin layer of glaze to a 2' x 3' section.

  2. Firmly dab a clean stippling brush up and down on the glaze, in a random pattern, leaving a wet edge. A wet edge is the 6" untouched area of the section you are painting. The paint should remain wet until blended with the next section.

  3. Paint another glazed section up to the edge of the last section. Avoid overlapping the previous section. If two areas overlap, use a clean brush to stipple it off.

  4. Repeat the dabbing process while blending the untouched area of the previous section with the new one.

  5. Wipe the brush frequently or you will end up applying glaze instead of removing it. Wash and dry the brush occasionally.

  6. Allow the paint to dry completely. Remove dropcloths and tape.

Stippling Paint On
  1. Pour a small amount of glaze into a paint tray.

  2. Lightly dab the ends of the brush bristles in paint and blot them on a paper towel.

  3. Firmly dab the brush up and down on the wall in a random pattern.

  4. Wipe the brush frequently to avoid overloading it. Wash and dry the brush occasionally.

  5. Allow the area to dry completely. Remove dropcloths and tape.
