Color and texture are two of the biggest influences in the tone of your home's décor. Faux stone can bring together interesting color combinations and a unique texture all in one easy finish. You don't have to be a mason to put your décor on a solid foundation and add interesting patterns to your walls. With a faux stone finish all you need are some basic tools, a little patience and a flair for the unexpected. Lowe's is happy to provide this information as a service to you.

Prepare the Room
  1. Clear the furniture out of the room and cover the floor with drop cloths.

  2. Close all the room's vents and seal any doors to contain as much sanding dust as possible.

  3. Scuff sand the walls with 150 grit sand paper. Scuff sanding helps the wall board compound adhere to the wall. Be sure to wear a dust mask and eye protection while sanding

  4. Vacuum the room thoroughly with a wet/dry vacuum. Take the drop cloths outside and shake them out to get rid of as much dust as possible. Wipe the entire room down with a damp cloth, rinsing thoroughly and often.

Apply Wall Board Compound
  1. Use a flexible putty knife to apply wall board compound to the wall. Spread the compound over small areas so it doesn't harden and become unworkable. Use a broad knife to work the compound down to a thickness of about 1/8".

  2. While the compound is still pliable, dab it with a damp sea sponge to add texture to the compound's surface. If needed, use the putty knife or broad knife to tone down the texture so the surface looks like rough stone.

  3. Grout Lines.
Score grout lines in the compound.
Once you have achieved the texture effect you want, use a pointing tool or a gloved finger to score grout lines in the compound. Continue with steps one through three until your room is complete.

  4. Allow the compound to fully cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Paint the Wall
  1. Spray the Compound.
Allow the faux stone paint to dry completely before painting in the grout.
Tape off anything you don't want painted to protect it from over-spray.

  2. Cover the compound with faux stone spray paint to give the appearance of actual stone. Allow the paint to dry completely.

  3. Use a small paintbrush to fill in the grout lines with the color of your choice.
