Step 1: Spray-paint two 17" planters, set aside and allow to
dry. We chose bright red paint for a fun effect. Because they eventually
will be filled with concrete, consider using lightweight foam planters.
Step
2: Cut a 4" square block from the post to serve as the
base for a rod. Drill a 3⁄8" hole through the center.
Step
3: Using
a hammer, tap the rod into the wooden block until it is secure.
This will serve as the support for your topiary. Set the
rod and block
down in the middle of the planter.
Step 4: Pour dry concrete mix over and around the wooden block 6"
to 8" deep to form a base and stabilize the rod. Add water, and let
the concrete set according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 5:
Using a jigsaw, cut a 16" circle from the 2' square piece of plywood.
Create the shelf that will hold the pumpkins. Drill a 1" hole through
the center of the circle, and place it in the planter with the rod running
through the hole. (Note: The wood circle will sit roughly 1" below
the top of the planter.)
Step 6:
Select three pumpkins of varying sizes. Drill a 1⁄2" hole in
the top and bottom of the largest two. Slide the largest pumpkin onto
the rod, resting it on the wooden circle. Then slide the next largest
pumpkin onto the rod, resting it on the first one. Drill a small hole
in only the bottom of the smallest third pumpkin, using it to top off
the arrangement. (Note: The rod should not protrude through the top of
the third pumpkin.)
Step
7:Tuck
leaves and berries between each pumpkin to blend them together and
to give the arrangement some texture. Add finishing
touches to your
topiary by
packing Spanish moss around the edge of the pot to hide any exposed
wood.
Step
8: Repeat steps 2 through 7 to make the second topiary, and
place one on each side of your door or entrance to your home. (Note: After
being drilled, the pumpkins will last approximately five days.)
