Before You Build

Standard seating height ranges from 18" to 21". Take into consideration the actual height of your storage seat when the cushion has been added. If you already have a table for your breakfast nook, measure its height before you begin building, and be sure to note the vertical width of its apron. You may wish to adjust the height of your seating to allow the necessary legroom.

How-To Steps

The instructions and lists provided here are for one storage seat. Increase as necessary if your nook plan includes more than one seat.

Bench hinges.
The bench's hinged top with finger holes provides easy access to items below.

Step 1: Cut all pieces per the cut list.

Step 2
a. Attach the back panel to the base panel with 1 1⁄2" wood screws.
b. Secure side panels to base and back panels (creating butt joints) with 1 1⁄2" wood screws.
c. Fit center support inside the box, directly in the center. Attach to the back and base panels using 1 1⁄2" wood screws.
d. Use 1 1⁄2" wood screws to fasten the front panel to the side and base panels and the center support.

Step 3: Measure and mark the center 3⁄4" of the hinge support. Position the two dust lips outside these marks, extending outward from the support edge by 3⁄4". Attach to the underside of the hinge support using 1 1⁄4" wood screws. (Note: Precise measurements are crucial here because the dust lips need to allow space for the center support.) Fasten the hinge support to the back panel with 1 1⁄2" wood screws.

Seat height.
The 18" seat height nicely accommodates large and awkward items.

Step 4
a. Prior to installing the seat, locate and mark the studs. Also remove any existing baseboards to allow the seat to sit flush against the wall.
b. Install the seat by drilling 2 1⁄2" exterior deck screws through the back panel into each stud.
c. Check to make sure the seat is level and plumb. Drive in wood shims to correct where necessary.
d. Carefully measure and miter the front and side base trim to fit the base of the front and side panels. Attach trim using 1 1⁄4" brad nails. (Note: If joining multiple seats, do not attach trim on the adjoining sides.)
e. Attach the front and side top trim as in Step 4d. Position these pieces so that the top edges rise 3⁄4" above the edge of the front and side panels; this will allow the lid to sit flush with the sides when installed.

Step 5
a. Place lid in position with a 1⁄8" gap around all sides.
b. Drill two 1 1⁄4" finger holes for opening and closing the lid, positioning them 2" from the center line and 2" from the front edge of the lid.
c. Surface-mount the hinges centered over the gap, attaching them to the lid and hinge support.

Step 6: Patch all nail holes with wood filler, and sand edges. Prime and paint the storage seat the same color as the existing wall in a semigloss finish.

Step 7: Choose a fabric to match your deécor and have the cushions custom made. We used a 2" thickness on our cushions for maximum comfort.
