The castle hutch, painted red and yellow on the inside, brightens any child's room.

The Perfect Palace

Skill Level: Intermediate/Advanced

This castle hutch allows your child to organize his belongings while his imagination runs free.

Bring a blank wall in your child's room to life with this fantasy furnishing. Let your little one's imagination run wild as he stacks toys, books, knickknacks, and stuffed animals inside this castle hutch. The sturdy hutch not only adds character to the room, but placing it on top of a chest also contributes ample storage for toys and other collectibles. The hutch is painted to match the room and accented with bright colors. Every child has a collection of some kind, so let this castle house his favorite things and provide a whimsical play space for years to come. Lowe's is happy to provide this information as a service to you.

Before you begin the cutting and building process, you may want to familiarize yourself with the project, sketch, and layout of the hutch. Pay special attention both to the measurements and to the assembly sequence.

Painting the Castle
Flags created from canvas drop cloths and wooden dowels add a finishing touch.

Use high-gloss paint on the hutch and dresser to ensure easy cleaning. Choose a base color that blends well with the room, and then add bright tones. Here, primary hues accent the base coat. Paint the inside of the hutch first. Tape off the outside edges of the windows and the shelves to avoid spillover paint. Apply as many coats as desired, allowing drying time between each. Once the inside of the shelves and cubbies are dry, tape off the inside edges and begin painting the outside. Apply as many coats as desired. Note: When painting the chest, remove the drawers, and paint them separately. Prime the chest and drawers, and paint the same number of coats used on the hutch.

Decorative Touches

Top off the castle with flags. Cut the shapes out of a used canvas drop cloth or felt scraps. Paint both sides in the same hues as the inside of the hutch. To create flagpoles, cut four rods from one 3/8" round dowel, and paint them the same color as the hutch base. Wrap the flags around the flagpole, and secure with Liquid Nails. Place one flagpole in each top corner notch.
