Leaf Blower Buying Guide

If you need to move a lot of leaves, a big rake (or a lot of help) sure comes in handy. When neither of those two solutions are options a leaf blower is the tool for you. Lowe’s is happy to provide a leaf blower buyer guide as a service to you.

Leaf Blower Types

The general idea of a leaf blower is simple. A high-speed fan is surrounded by a cover. Tubes are connected to the side of the fan to focus the air current (up to around 200 miles per hour in some units) in the direction you want to move the leaves. There are two main types of leaf blowers.

  • Blowers perform the single, simple function of blowing material.

  • Blower/vacuum combinations combine the blower function with a vacuum feature. Leaves or debris can be directed into an attached bag, which makes this type of unit great for vacuuming leaves from shrubs. An additional mulching feature is available on some leaf blower/vacuums. Mulched lawn debris can be used in compost piles or bagged for disposal. Most convert easily from blowing to vacuuming mode.

Whether you need a simple leaf blower or blower/vac you'll need to decide the best method to use to get the job done. There are three styles of leaf blowers. Match the style to your needs.

  • Handheld units are the most popular. Available in gas- or electric-powered versions, they're portable and convenient, yet powerful. These models can get heavy while using. Larger models can also vibrate a bit at full throttle. Consider the weight and balance of the unit when shopping.

  • Backpack leaf blowers are gas-powered. The blower fits in a harness that's worn on the operator's back. The hose reaches to the front where the user operates the throttle and blow or vacuum tube. Backpack blowers are normally used in larger areas.

  • Walk Behind leaf blowers cover the most acreage. Mounted on wheels, these gas-powered machines are normally the tool of choice for commercial users, but for regular homeowners, they can make short work of a home lawn. Vacuum units use a hose for picking up debris.

Power Sources

Blowers are powered either by electricity or gasoline. Part of your purchasing decision is based on how much portability you need.

  • Idea Good idea:  When choosing an extension cord, remember that if the gauge used is too small, the motor will not perform well. Match the power rating of the tool to a compatible cord. Always buy a cord rated for outdoor use.
Electric leaf blowers are lighter, quieter and vibrate less than gas units. An electric motor drives the fan, so there's no need to mix fuel or refill. Smaller yards are especially good candidates for electric blowers. There are two types:

    • Corded leaf blowers provide constant power as long as you have access to an electrical outlet. The attached cord limits mobility so this may not be the best choice for a lawn with lots of trees. Look for a cord retention system to prevent the cord from being accidentally unplugged during use.

    • Rechargeable/battery-operated leaf blowers are good alternatives for smaller areas or jobs. They work well on solid surfaces like driveways and garages. They're limited by their run time and the fact that they move less air than larger models.

  • Gas-powered leaf blowers use a 2-cycle engine, requiring mixing oil and gasoline. Mobility and work output are increased with gas blowers. They're louder and heavier than electric blowers.

Additional Considerations

In order to make accurate comparisons while shopping, keep these measurement and features in mind:

  • CFM (cubic feet per minute) is the measure of vacuuming power. Ratings fall in the 350 to 600 CFM range.

  • MPH (miles per hour) measures blowing. Leaf blowers perform at levels from 125 - 210 mph.

  • Decibels (dB) is the noise rating.

  • Reduction ratio on mulching blower/vacuums calculates how many units of leaves the mulcher can produce. A 10:1 ratio means that 10 bags of leaves can be reduced to 1 bag of mulch.

  • Speed settings allow better control when blowing or vacuuming.

  • Attachments, such as extension tubes for cleaning gutters, are available separately.

Always wear eye, ear and respiratory protection when using a leaf blower.

Make sure you call before you dig!  NOTE: Leaf blowers can be loud. Check your municipality for any local ordinances on blower use before purchasing.
