Choosing Landscaping Block and Pavers

We've all seen and admired landscapes that include walls, patios and walkways. The technical term is hardscaping. Don't let that name discourage you. These projects are not hard. The reason — precast concrete block and pavers. Lowe's is happy to provide this information as a service to you.

Block and paver projects are great for do-it-yourselfers. These projects can actually be fun, akin to putting puzzles together. For a modest investment of time and money, you can refine or redefine a landscape.

The Basics

Decorative precast products are made by pouring concrete into a variety of forms to create the desired shape and texture. Tinting is added to produce the different colors and shades.

Concrete is different from quarried stone products in that they are uniform in shape and size. This allows installation with a minimum of cutting. Their uniform size also simplifies the planning and purchasing process.

In addition to walls, patios and walkways, concrete products can be used for edging, entryways, driveways, borders for water gardens, tree rings, planters and more.

Their various shapes, textures, sizes and colors allow a wide variety of patterns to be installed. They can be used horizontally or vertically, straight or curved or in combinations of all. Precast products replicate the look of stone, brick, tile or cobblestone.

Concrete products are simple to install and maintain. Most projects can be completed with a few simple tools. Because most are loose-laid (installed without mortar), they are less likely to shift and crack in colder climates than a solid slab.

On the downside, they're heavy and require some physical exertion to install. The products also require the ability to haul enough for your project. That problem is easily solved by having them delivered.

When cutting is required, you will need special tools and accessories. A brick chisel and engineer's hammer is sufficient or some cuts, others require a power saw with a diamond blade.

Selecting
Block and Pavers.
Block and paver projects are great for do-it-yourselfers.

When choosing product for your home project, recognize your own personal taste, the design of your home and the function you want the construction to perform.

When installing block or pavers, remember that they are part of a complete system. Equally important are the foundation, base layers (sand and gravel), perimeter edging and underlayment.

NOTE: Mortarless wall block is intended for construction of relatively low walls. Taller retaining walls can be constructed but further consideration must be given to drainage, reinforcement and stability.

Recommended dry-fit heights vary by product. As a general reference, consider 3' tall as a guide for planning purposes. Consult the manufacturer's instructions concerning height limits.

Maintenance

Pavers may get an occasional stain. Simple stains can be cleaned with detergent, especially if you act quickly. Some stains may require the paver to be removed (some can simply be flipped over to expose a new side). Keep a few extra on hand from your installation so you'll have some that match the size and shade.

Sealing after installation is an option. Sealing protects from staining, but you will need to re-apply the sealer every 2-3 years.
