Ceiling tile comes in panels with choices of drop ceilings, tiles or planks.
-
Drop ceiling panels rest in a grid system suspended from the ceiling joists. The nature of the grid system makes it easy to level any ceiling
and offers the added benefit of easy access to pipes and wiring above the ceiling. The ceilings are available in 2' by 2' and 4' by 4' panels
in several different textures and styles.
- Tiles and planks mount directly to the ceiling and offer a sleeker look
than drop ceilings. Since the tiles mount directly to the ceiling,
you don't lose as much head room as with a drop ceiling. Tiles come
in 12" by 12" squares and planks are made in three sizes;
6" by 48", 6" by 80" and 5" by 78".
With the many designs available, you're sure to find one that's right for you.

Gypsum wallboard is made from crushed gypsum sheathed in paper (smooth
on the faced side and natural on the backside). It is one of the most
common ceiling coverings in use today. Gypsum gives the appearance of
plaster without the need for lath backer strips or the high degree of
skill required to apply plaster. Gypsum is suitable for painting or
as a base for popcorn ceiling and most other textured finishes.
Popcorn
ceiling is a thick coating that is usually applied to wall
board with a specialized texturing spray gun. The texture enables you
to create the effect of plaster or stucco on ceilings and it's thick
enough to hide minor flaws.
Textured paint is a thick form of paint, infused with particles to yield
a textured or three dimensional effect. It also enables you to create
the effect of plaster or stucco on ceilings. Lowe's stocks three types
of textured paint:
- Smooth texture gives a stucco effect.
- Sand texture gives a slightly rough effect (like sandpaper) because of added sand particles.
- Ceiling texture gives a "popcorn" effect much the same as sprayed-on
textured ceilings.
Textured paints are for interior use only. A custom color can be mixed or the base
white can be painted after it is dry. Use an inexpensive applicator (special
texture roller cover, coarse brush, putty knife or trowel) to apply textured
paint on the desired surface.
Plank paneling is a solid wood product usually milled from 1x stock. Most
plank paneling has a tongue milled into one edge and a groove milled into
the other. This design makes it possible to nail through the tongue of
one board and hide the nails with the groove of the next. Ordinarily plank
paneling comes in widths from 2 1/2" to 8" and lengths up to
10'. Paneling made from different species of wood provides just the right
nuance for any sense of style or taste.
