Steps to Build a Window Box

Step 1: Cut one 1 x 6 into two pieces that are 34 inches long to form the sides of the window box. Then cut the other 1 x 6 to 32 inches long to form the base. To construct the end pieces, cut the remaining wood into two (6-inch-long) pieces. This will yield two 6- x 6-inch squares.

Step 2: The front of the box is angled out. To form the angle, measure 3/4" on one side of each of the end pieces, and draw a line. Then mark a diagonal cutting line in between the end of the wood and the line you just drew. Cut one side of each end piece along that diagonal line. The opposite side will remain straight to keep the box flush with the wall.

Step 3: Using weatherproof wood glue, join one side to one end.
Then secure with finishing nails.

Step 4: Next, join the base to the side and end with glue and finishing nails. Repeat this procedure with the other side.

Step 5: Drill drainage holes through the base of the box.

Step 6: Affix the screen door trim for decoration using finishing nails.

Step 7: Apply an exterior paint in the desired color. Be sure to paint the inside and underneath to protect the wood.

Step 8: Using a drill and four wood screws, attach window box to the wall with screws, one in each back corner of the box.
