Measuring for Cabinets and Wood Frame
  1. Measure the height, width and depth of the area for the window seat.

  2. Select the number of wall cabinets needed to fill the space. Be sure to buy cabinets that are full-frame and solid wood so they will be sturdy enough to support weight.

Example: For our window, the area is 80" wide.

You need two 15"X36" cabinets and 8"X15" of cabinet filler.

  3. To determine the lineal footage of 2x4 or 2x6, measure the width of the area and depth of the cabinet minus 1/4" for the toekick. Remove the base moulding in the seat area before measuring. Measure the base of the cabinet minus the doors.

Example: If the area is 80" wide and 12" deep (minus 1/4"), you need 16' of 2x4.

    Cut two 80" 2x4s and three 7 3/4" 2 x4s.

Idea

Good idea:When you pick out your
cabinets, purchase side and toekick materials that match the cabinets.

Installing the Cabinets

If you purchase unfinished cabinets, finish them before installing.

1. Build the wooden frame pedestal using 2x4 lumber and 2 1/2" wood screws (for additional height use 2x6 lumber ). The frame should be the same width as the window seat area and the same depth as the bottom of the cabinet minus the doors and 1/4" for the toekick. Place a center support in the middle of the frame.

2. Slide the frame flat into the seat area and make sure the frame is level. If it is not, use wood shims to level it.

3. Anchor the sides and back of the frame to the wall studs.

4. Center the cabinets under the window.

5. Hold the cabinets together using clamps. Ensure that they are flush on the top and front.

6. Predrill holes in the side frames of each cabinet. Screw the cabinets together through the face frames with 2 1/2" wood screws.

7. Drill pilot holes into the base pedestal and screw the cabinets to the frame.

8. If your cabinets are not a perfect fit, measure the distance between the wall and the cabinet sides. Measure the length from the top of the cabinet to the floor.

9. Transfer the measurements to the filler material and cut.

10. Fasten the filler pieces to the sides of the cabinet and the frame with wood screws. Keep the filler piece flush with the front of the cabinet.

11. Cut a piece of moulding the same length as the base to place at the front of the cabinet along the floor. Attach the moulding using finish nails.

12. Measure the width and depth of the area. Cut a piece of 3/4" faced plywood to fit for the top. The top can overhang the cabinets a little to accommodate a cushion.

13. Sand and finish the plywood to match the cabinets.

14. Run a bead of adhesive caulk along the top edges of the cabinets and filler pieces.

15. Place the top on the cabinets and press into place.

16. Fill all nail holes with caulk or wood putty. Touchup any areas to present a finished piece.
