Build a ChoiceDek® Window Box Planter

Planters are great for gardening on a small scale. You can use them to grow everything from vegetables and herbs to decorative houseplants. Since they're so easy to construct, you can build the planter yourself for an added personalized touch. A novice should be able to construct a planter in two or three hours with basic tools. Materials

  • One piece 12' ChoiceDek decking board
  • 1 1/2" stainless steel screws
  • 3" stainless steel screws
  • Water resistant wood glue
  • Wood putty

Construction Note:
The ribbed face of the ChoiceDek boards should face toward the box's outside.

Cut the Pieces

Bottom of box. 1. Cut two 30" pieces from the ChoiceDek decking board for the front and back of the planter.



2. For the bottom, cut another 30" piece of ChoiceDek decking board Set the bevel of the saw at 10° and rip the piece so it is 5" wide at its widest face.

Box side.3. Cut two pieces of ChoiceDek decking board 5 1/2"wide and 5 1/2" tall. Mark and cut the pieces so they taper from 5 1/2" at the top to 5' at the bottom.

Assemble the Pieces

Box pieces. 1. Lay out the pieces and dry fit them together as shown. Make any adjustments indicated by the dry fit.


2. Glue and clamp the pieces together. Predrill countersink holes for the screws and screw the pieces together. Use wood putty to cover the screws.

3. Drill 1/8" holes in the bottom of the planter for drainage.

ChoiceDek Finishing Note: Left unfinished, ChoiceDek will weather to a beautiful grey patina. If you wish, you may apply paint, stain or a clear, topcoat finish to ChoiceDek. Allow the material to weather slightly before applying any finish.

Anchor the Window Box

1. Cut two pieces of your ChoiceDek decking board into 1" by 2" strips. The strips will act as spacers between the window box and the wall to allow air to circulate between them.

2. Align the tops of the strips with the top of the back piece on the window box. Drill pilot holes through the back of window box and the strips.

3. Use 3" stainless steel screws to secure the the window box to the wall.
