Suzani-Style Wall Art
An embroidered textile from Central Asia called suzani inspired this awesome piece of wall art. Instead of using needle and thread, we created this easy project by cutting shapes from veneer and sandpaper.

Instructions
Step 1
Have a Lowe's associate cut your plywood in half; it should measure 2' x 2'.
Step 2
Apply a water-based stain to one side of the plywood. (We used Minwax Mediterranean Olive.) Let dry.
Step 3
Using the templates provided and scissors or a utility knife, cut five large flower shapes (A) out of burgundy sandpaper, five small flower shapes (B) out of black sandpaper, and five small circles (C) out of oak veneer.
Step 4
Rub paint (we used Valspar Signature Blue Galaxy) on the small circles with a soft cloth; let dry. Iron the circles onto the centers of the small black flowers. Spray-adhere these to the centers of the large, burgundy flowers.
Step 5
Spray-adhere one of the flowers to the center of the plywood and the remaining flowers to the four corners of the plywood, about 3/4" in from each side.
Step 6
Using our template, cut eight leaf shapes (D) out of oak veneer. Rub paint (we used Valspar Signature Green Tea) on with a cloth; let dry. Spray-adhere leaves on both sides of each corner flower.
Step 7
Cut a doughnut shape (E) out of oak veneer using our template. Rub paint (Blue Galaxy) on with a cloth; let dry. Center and iron onto the plywood.
Step 8
Cut two decorative rings out of oak veneer using our templates. Apply wood stain to the larger ring (F) (we used Minwax Dark Walnut); let dry. Rub paint (Green Tea) on the smaller ring (G) with a cloth; let dry. Iron the larger ring around the doughnut shape on the plywood. Then iron the smaller ring onto the doughnut shape around the flower at the center of the plywood.
Good to Know
We built a frame for the plywood art with two 1" x 3" x 6' pine boards. Cut mitered corners as shown, or use a table saw to cut the boards to two 2'-long pieces and two 25-1/2"-long pieces. Place the 2' pieces on opposite sides of the plywood; do the same with the 25-1/2" pieces. Nail the pieces together and nail to the plywood edges.
Step 9
Attach a centered picture hanger to the back of the plywood and hang.
