Gray kitchen cabinetry

Go Gray

There’s nothing boring about gray cabinetry. The fashion-forward choice excites against marble-look counters and mosaic stone tile. Silver hardware finishes and a gray fabric window shade complete the look. Cabinets shown are Diamond’s Peyton style in a Portobello finish. These are paired with American Olean Delfino smoky topaz mosaic tiles (#252969), Chiaro fnatural stone tiles (#260610), and Arctic Topaz limestone tiles (#253456). Kohler’s Bellera stainless-steel faucet (#311458) is lit by a Hammond nickel mini pendant (#411831, Model V5070-62).

Call Out a Classic

We love creamy off-white cabinets (Dresden door style in Amaretto Crème from Diamond), especially when they’re paired with a sophisticated stone-look laminate countertop and a glass-tile backsplash of Dark Straw Brush Strokes glass mosaics (#245414) and Barrel Glass mosaic subway tiles (#373008). The oil-rubbed finishes on the hardware, lighting, and Moen’s Muirfield faucet -- shown in Mediterranean bronze (#73547) -- take color cues from the tile. Lighting the sink is an allen + roth™ oil-rubbed bronze mini pendant (#137330).

Wake Up Wood

Rich cherry cabinets and dark stone-look counters come to life next to a light, lively porcelain backsplash. The window shade repeats the design’s vertical lines, while the pendant (#351053) and faucet (#311841) positively gleam. The backsplash combines Leonia sand-glazed porcelain mosaic subway tiles (#120556) and sand-glazed porcelain floor tiles (#486466).

Mosaic tile backsplash

Make a (Back) Splash

Consider popular subway or mosaic tiles arranged in a lively pattern to create a focal point. For example, put your personal stamp on the backsplash pattern by going vertical instead of horizontal or by adding border or accent tile.

Treat Your Windows to Shades

Let fabric window treatments soften hard kitchen lines and surfaces. Choose a window treatment that provides the light and privacy you need while adding texture and pattern. Use window treatments to add a splash of color in a low-risk way.

Pendant light fixture

Build in Elegant Lighting

Make lighting part of your kitchen design from the start -- not an afterthought. Use a high-profile light fixture -- such as a pendant above the sink -- to set the style for your kitchen. Choose a fixture that repeats a shape, finish, or bit of detailing from other kitchen elements.

Select Cabinets with Care

Choose a cabinetry style you can live with for years. Consider different finishes for upper, lower, and island cabinetry. Check the door profile: Straight lines tend to have a clean aesthetic, while curved moulding looks more traditional.

Counter Arguments

Choose your countertops in concert with the cabinets and backsplash. Look for a countertop material that subtly picks up a color or a pattern from your cabinets or backsplash. Explore solid surfaces, quartz, and laminates as alternatives to stone.

Bronze-finish kitchen faucet

Style on Tap

Find a faucet that pairs well with the sink, cabinet hardware, and light fixtures. Pay attention to finishes: Polished finishes reflect light and add luminosity; brushed and satin finishes are more muted, adding subtle detail. Go bold with a dark and dramatic bronze-finish faucet.
