Freshen Up Containers for Fall

Brought to you by Lowe's Creative Ideas

By the end of summer, many annuals have lost their luster. But you can revive containers with fresh plants and accessories. Here are 6 colorful options for fall containers and window boxes.

1. Pansies come in hues of blue, purple, white, maroon, and yellow as well as bicolors. These hardy flowers look great edging a container or window box because of their short stature and large cheery flowers.

2. Ornamental kale is a showy vegetable offering big, colorful, frilly leaves in white, purple, pink, and green-blue. You need just a few plants to fill up a container or window box. Kale can take autumn’s cool temperatures and even a light frost.

3. Asters look great in containers, particularly dwarf varieties that grow only 6 to 8 inches tall. They boast fringed flowers in purple, blue, or pink with bright yellow centers, and they are practically maintenance-free.

4. Chrysanthemums are a fall favorite and a standout for containers and window boxes because they come in so many different colors: red, lavender, white, yellow, gold, russet, and chartreuse. Mums come in double and single flowers, too.

5. Gourds and pumpkins are plentiful in fall—farm stands and grocery store produce bins are overflowing with them. There’s no planting involved—just stack them in a container or mix them among the plants.

6. Berried branches can help jazz up containers. Crabapple trees, viburnum shrubs, and bittersweet vines are all good candidates. So are the bright red hips on some rosebushes. As a bonus, you can leave the branches in place all winter to feed the birds.
