Do-It-Yourself Stone Raised Flower Bed

Stone Raised Flower Bed

Create a raised flower bed using flagstone wall block to define spaces in your lawn or garden.

Tools & Materials

Use this checklist when you go to the store and purchase your items.

Install Your Flower Bed

Wall block sizes vary by style and market. Use the quantity in the material list as a guide. Also, when purchasing wall block, remember that some block has an interlocking lip on the bottom for use in retaining walls, not stacked block projects.

Step 1

Mark out the perimeter of an 8-foot circle with marking paint, and excavate a trench 12 inches wide and 4 inches deep. The trench may have to be deeper in certain spots if the ground is sloped.

Step 2

Install 4 inches of paver base in the trench, leveling and compacting as you go.

Step 3

Install the first block, making sure it's level side to side and front to back. You can add or remove some of the base material to aid in the leveling. You can also tap the block with a rubber mallet to help adjust.

Step 4

Butt the second block up to the first one, and level the second block to the first one, adjusting as necessary. Continue adding blocks and adjusting until the first level is complete.

Step 5

Start the second course by laying the first block on top of the second course, ensuring that the joint or seam isn't lined up with the joint of the previous course. The second course should be half way over the block on the first course.

Step 6

Continue adding blocks until the second course is complete.

Step 7

Once the second course is complete, install a bead of construction adhesive on the top of it. From there, install the third and final course on to the second course.
