Painting Supplies

Brushes and Rollers

To apply paint, you'll need some brushes and rollers. Definitely spring for top quality here; it makes a big difference.

As a general rule, you'll want to:

  • Use a nylon/polyester filament brush for applying latex paint.
  • Use a natural China bristle brush for applying oil paint.
  • Use a 1- to 2 1/2-inch angular sash brush for detailed work and for cutting in.
  • Use a 2 1/2-inch straight brush for your trim work.

Interior Jobs

Use a roller with a short nap for smooth surfaces. Use a roller with ½- to 1-inch nap (or more) for textured walls. With all rolling work, but for ceilings in particular, an extension handle makes for easier work.

Exterior Jobs

If you're not planning to use a paint sprayer for painting your exterior siding, use a roller with an extension handle.

What Else Do I Need to Buy?

You'll also need some additional supplies. Here's a handy shopping list:

  • Blue "painter's tape"
  • Lightweight spackle
  • Putty knife
  • Painter's acrylic caulk
  • Painter's plastic
  • Rolling pan and liners
  • Brush comb
  • Rags
  • A "gunk remover" like Goop
  • Latex gloves

What You'll Need

Use Lowe's paint calculator to get the right amount of paint for each room.
