Outdoor Movie Screen

Bring the excitement of a live stadium game to your backyard or driveway with an outdoor projector screen that's easy to create and store. Follow our step-by-step instructions to make the screen, and find tips for your tailgating party or family movie night.

Instructions

Rough cost estimate: $90 (Does not include applicable taxes, which vary by market.)
Rough time estimate: 2 hours

Step 1

Iron a 6- x 9-foot drop cloth to remove wrinkles.

Tip: Use a high-steam setting for best results.

Step 2

drop cloth movie screen

Attach two 4-foot-long self-fastening strips to the edge of one 9-foot side of the drop cloth. Attach the corresponding piece of each self-fastening strip approximately 2 inches from the first strips to create a small pocket. Place a 10-foot-long round dowel rod in the pocket, and affix the self-fastening strips together. Repeat on the other 9-foot side of the cloth.

Step 3

hang movie screen

Cut a 12-foot length of rope, and tie it to each end of the dowel on the top part of the screen. Predrill and attach two 1 1/4- inch cup hooks approximately 4 feet apart on a wall or above your garage door (as shown here). Hang the top portion of the screen from the cup hooks.

Note: Use cup hooks for wood and vinyl siding; choose masonry picture hangers if you have brick walls.

Step 4

stabilize screen by tying ends of rope to buckets3

Cut two 3-foot lengths of rope, and tie one end of each length to the dowel on the bottom portion of the screen. Pour sand into two 12-quart galvanized buckets, and tie the ends of the bottom rope pieces to the buckets. This will help stabilize the screen.

Note: We applied red spray paint to the buckets.

Hot Ideas for a Festive Night

Keep the party rolling with these helpful hints.

Light citronella candles (#183985), and place them around your entertaining area to ward off mosquitoes. Have insect repellant (#84335) on hand for guests.

Check with local audiovisual companies to rent a projector. Many will bring the equipment to your house and set it up for a fee that is much less than the price of a new home theater system.

Keep drinks chilled in a large, durable galvanized tub (#90007).
