Measure and Prep for Hanging Wallpaper

Learn how to measure and prepare your walls to hang wallpaper with this video and tutorial.

Get Ready to Hang Wallpaper

Wallpaper is a great way to add some color and personality to a room. The key is to plan and prep like a professional.

Step 1

To begin, measure the total linear footage of the room. This can be calculated by multiplying the total feet of the room by the height of the walls. If the ceilings are vaulted, measure from the highest wall for your measurements. At this time it would be good to look over your wallpaper especially for wallpaper with patterns. Be sure that the patterns will match up as you begin to lay each roll.

Step 2

Next you will want to patch any holes or marks in the drywall. Using spackle and a putty knife, spackle the holes in the walls. Once dry, sand the area smooth with fine grit sandpaper.

Step 3

Priming the walls is a necessary and important aspect of prepping a wall for hanging wallpaper. Begin by wiping down the walls with hot water and minimal soap. Once dry, mark off the trim and ceiling with painters tape. Using wallpaper primer sealer, paint the walls that are being wallpapered. This will not only make for easy installation but will also be crucial if the paper ever needs to be taken down. Once the sealant is dry, you can begin to hang the wallpaper.
