How to Measure Blinds & Shades

1. To find width: Take three measurements. Measure the exact distance between the inside surfaces of the window frame at the top, middle and bottom. Use the narrowest width.
   • Do not make any width deductions. For custom shades, the factory will automatically deduct three-eighths inch from the shade width. For Trim&Go shades, a half-inch deduction will be taken on the entire shade.
2. To find height: Measure the exact distance from the inside surface at the top of the window to the sill.
   • If you prefer the shade not to touch the sill, deduct a quarter inch.
   • If there is no sill, measure the height to the point where you want the shade to reach.

When you mount cellular shades on the outside, allow the blind to overlap 1 1/2 to 3 inches on the sides, top and bottom of the window.

1. To find width: Measure the exact distance between the outermost points where the shade is to be placed. This width measurement should overlap each side of the window frame by at least 1 1/2 inch. The factory will make no deduction from your shade's width dimensions.
2. To find height: Measure the exact distance from where the top of the shade will be located to the top of the sill.
   • If there is no sill or if the shade is to overlap the window frame, measure to the point where the shade is to reach.

Minimum Mounting Surface

Use the above chart to verify that you have adequate window depth for mounting.

1. To find width: Measure the width of the window inside the sill at the top. The factory will automatically deduct a quarter inch for clearance.
2. To find height: Take three measurements. Measure the height of the window from the top to the sill in three places. Use the smallest dimension for the shade height. The factory will automatically deduct an eighth inch.

Note that blinds installed on windows near wall or baseboard heaters must clear the heaters by 12 inches above and 6 inches to the side.

1. To find width: Measure the width of the window, and add 4 inches to each side (for a total of 8 inches) for maximum light control and privacy. Give this measurement when you order.
2. To find height: Take two measurements. Measure the exact height of the window outside the sill in two places. Use the greater height. Add the recommended overlap of 3 inches to the top and bottom, for a total overlap of 6 inches. Give this measurement when ordering.

1. To find width: Measure the width of the window outside the sill at the top. The factory will automatically deduct a quarter inch for clearance.
   • For wall-to-wall installation, specify the exact width at the ceiling height. The factory will automatically deduct a quarter inch.
2. To find height: Measure the height of the window from the top to the floor (or top of the carpet pile) in 3 places. Use the smallest dimension for the shade height. The factory will automatically deduct a quarter inch.

1. To find width: Measure the exact width of the patio door and add 4 inches to each side (for a total of 8 inches) for maximum light control and privacy. Give this measurement when you order.
2. To find height: Measure the exact height of the door in two places. Use the greater height. Add the recommended overlap of 3 inches to the top of the door. Allow for a half inch of space above the floor for proper clearance. Give this measurement when ordering.

1. To find width: Measure the opening across the top where the headrail is to be installed from the inside of the sill on the left to the inside of the jamb on the right. Round the measurement down to the nearest eighth inch.
2. To find depth: A minimum depth of 2 7/8 inches is necessary to install these shades inside the window.
3. To find height: Measure from the inside top on the left, at the center, and on the right to the sill. Round down to the nearest eighth inch, and use the smallest dimension.
   • Do not make any allowances. The factory will make all adjustments so the headrail will fit the opening properly, and the shades will clear the sill by a quarter inch to a half inch.

Note that blinds installed on windows near wall or baseboard heaters must clear the heaters by 12 inches above and 6 inches to the side.

1. To find width: Measure the width of the area to be covered at the place where the headrail will be installed to the nearest eighth inch. The blind should overlap the opening at least 4 inches on each side to ensure privacy. To maintain the maximum view, allow adequate overlap and consider the stack width of the blind when open. (See the Vane Count and Stack Size Chart to help you determine the stack width.)
2. To find height: Measure the height of the area to be covered and round down to the nearest eighth inch. The blind should extend at least 3 inches above and 3 inches below the window sill. For ceiling-to-floor installations, make adequate allowance for carpeting.

1. To find width: Measure the width of the area to be covered at the place where the headrail will be installed to the nearest eighth inch. The blind should overlap at least 4 inches on each side to ensure privacy. To ensure easy access through the door and to allow for adequate overlap, consider the stack width of the blind when open. To calculate stack dimensions, consult the Vane Count and Stack Size Chart.
2. To find height: Measure the height of the area to be covered, and round down to the nearest eighth inch. The blind should extend at least 3 inches above the door molding. For ceiling-to-floor installations, deduct a half inch for proper clearance.

1. To find width: Take three measurements. Measure the exact distance to the nearest eighth inch between the inside surfaces of the window frame at the top, middle and bottom. Use the narrowest width. Do not make any width deductions.
   • For custom blinds, the factory will automatically make appropriate deductions.
   • For Trim&Go blinds, a half inch deduction will be taken on the entire blind.
2. To find height: Take three measurements. Measure the exact distance to the nearest eighth inch from the inside surface at the top of the window to the sill at the left, middle and right. Use the longest height.
   • If you prefer that the blind not touch the sill, deduct a quarter inch. If there is no sill, measure the height to the point where the shade should reach.

For outside-mount applications, make sure you allow the blind to overlap 1 1/2 to 3 inches on the sides, top and bottom of the window.

1. To find width: Measure the exact distance to the nearest eighth inch between the outermost points where the blind is to be placed. For optimal light control, this measurement should extend three-fourths inch beyond the window opening on each side (or 1 1/2 inches for the entire width).
2. To find height: : Measure the exact distance to the nearest eighth inch from where the top of the blind will be located to the top of the sill.
   • If there is no sill or if the blind is to overlap the window frame, measure to the point where the shade is supposed to reach.

1. Measure the overall width of the area to be covered.
2. Measure the width of the area each blind is to cover. Measure and specify the left shade first, continuing to the right.
   • The factory will allow a minimum of a half inch between shades for operating clearance.
3. The total width of all shades must equal the total headrail width.
4. To measure the height, use the standard inside or outside measuring procedures, as listed below:
   • For inside-mount: Measure the exact distance to the nearest eighth inch from the inside surface at the top of the window to the sill at the left, middle and right, and use the longest height. If you prefer that the blind not touch the sill, deduct a quarter inch. If there is no sill, measure the height to the point where the shade should reach.
   • For outside-mount: Measure the exact distance to the nearest eighth inch from where the top of the blind will be located to the top of the sill. If there is no sill or if the blind is to overlap the window frame, measure to the point where the shade is supposed to reach.

1. To find width: Take three measurements. Measure the width of the window opening at the top, middle and bottom. Use the narrowest dimension for ordering.
   • Tip-to-tip measure is the most common measure for most roller shades. Choosing this measure type will include the headrail pegs that mount the shade to the wall or frame.
   • Cloth-to-cloth measure is uncommon and should only be used for outside-frame applications. The headrail is wider than the cloth of the shade, which causes the pegs to extend beyond the width of the shade material. This total distance is 1 3/8 inches wide, or a gap of eleven-sixteenths inch on each side of the shade material.
   • Specify if your width measurement is the total shade width you desire (tip-to-tip) or the width of the fabric (cloth-to-cloth). The cloth-to-cloth measurement is 1 3/8 inches less than the tip-to-tip measurement. The factory will automatically take an allowance of three-eighths inch for operating clearance unless you specify otherwise.
2. To find height: Measure the height of the window from top to the sill in two places.
3. To install the product flush with the window frame, a minimum window depth of 2 inches is required without a valance and a minimum window depth of 4 inches is necessary with a valance.

For outside-mount applications, make sure you allow the blind to overlap 1 1/2 to 3 inches on the sides, top and bottom of the window.

1. To find width: Measure the exact width of the area to be covered. Add 3 inches total to the shade width for the standard, recommended overlap of 1 1/2 inches on each side.
   • Tip-to-tip measure is the most common measure for most roller shades. Choosing this measure type will include the headrail pegs that mount the shade to the wall or frame.
   • Cloth-to-cloth measure is uncommon and should only be used for outside-frame applications. The headrail is wider than the cloth of the shade, which causes the pegs to extend beyond the width of the shade material. This total distance is 1 3/8 inches wide, or a gap of 11/16 inch on each side of the shade material.
   • Specify if your width measurement is the total shade width you desire (tip-to-tip) or the width of the fabric (cloth-to-cloth).
2. To find height: Measure the height of the area to be covered. Measure from the ceiling or desired point above the window to approximately 1 1/2 inches below the window frame.

1. To find width: Measure the opening across the top, where the headrail is to be installed, from inside of the jamb on the left to the inside of the jamb on the right. Round the measurement down to the nearest eighth of an inch.
2. To find height: Take three measurements. Measure from the inside top of the opening on the left, at the center, and on the right to the sill to the closest eighth of an inch. Use the smallest dimension.
3. Do not make any allowances. Adjustments will automatically be made so the headrail will fit the opening properly and the vanes will clear the sill by a fourth of an inch to a half inch.

Note that blinds installed on windows near wall or baseboard heaters must clear the heaters by 12 inches above and 6 inches to the side.

Also, make sure there are no obstructions on either side of the window that may prevent you from ordering a wider blind. Measure the area to the left and right of each window from the frame to the nearest obstruction (such as a corner, fireplace, corner window, or bookcase).

1. To find width: Measure the width of the area to be covered at the place where the headrail will be installed. The blind should overlap the opening at least 4 inches on each side to ensure privacy.
2. To find height: Measure the height of the area to be covered. Blind should extend at least 3 inches above and 3 inches below opening or window molding.
   • For installations to the floor, deduct a half inch from the shortest height for proper clearance. Specifying outside-mount measurement means the factory makes allowances for headrail deductions only.

1. To find width: Measure the width of the area to be covered at the place where the headrail will be installed. The blind should overlap the opening at least 4 inches on each side to ensure privacy.
2. To find height: Measure the height of the area to be covered at the left, center and right. The blind should extend at least 3 inches above the opening or window molding.
   • To ensure easy access through the door and allow adequate overlap, consider the stack width of the blind when open.
   • For installations to the floor, deduct a half inch from the shortest height for proper clearance. Specifying outside-mount measurement means the factory makes allowances for headrail deductions only.

The minimum mounting depth is the depth required in the window frame for the blind to be mounted inside. For all natural woven shades, the minimum depth is three-quarters of an inch. However, to install the product flush with the window frame, a minimum window depth of 2 inches is required for custom shades and 2 1/4 inch for Trim&Go shades.

1. To find width: Measure the width of the window opening at three different places, and use the narrowest dimension for ordering.
   • A half inch deduction will be taken automatically for inside mount.
2. To find height: Measure the height of window from the top of the opening to the top of the sill in two places. Use the longest dimension. If you prefer the shade not to touch the sill, deduct a quarter inch. If there is no sill, measure height to the point where shade should reach.

For outside-mount applications, make sure you allow the blind to overlap 1 1/2 – 3 inches on the sides, top and bottom of the window.

1. To find width: Measure the exact width of the area to be covered. Add 3 inches to the shade width for the standard overlap of 1 1/2 inches on each side.
2. To find height: Measure the height of the area to be covered. Measure from the ceiling or desired point above the window to approximately 1 1/2 inches below the window frame. If there is no sill or if the blind is to overlap the window frame, measure to the point the shade should reach.

The minimum mounting depth is the depth required in the window frame for the blind to be mounted inside. For cordless shades, the minimum mounting depth is a half inch. For standard shades, the minimum mounting depth is five-eighths of an inch.
