Cord safety is a very important part of keeping your home safe. Avoid using extension cords when you can. But if you have to use them:
- Make sure the cord is in good condition and isn't frayed, stretched or worn.
- Keep cords away from foot traffic.
- Use a power strip or surge protector for items that are close together.
- Don't overload the circuit by plugging in too many items, this can create a fire hazard.
Peep Holes and Entry Door Viewers
Keeping your family safe from intruders is always a top priority. It may not be safe to open the door to strangers. Install peep holes or entry door viewers in exterior doors so you can see who's ringing the doorbell before you open the door.
Space Heaters

We sometimes use space or kerosene heaters as a way to keep heating costs down during cooler months. If you plan to use a space heater, keep your home safe from fire:
- Don't leave space heaters unattended - turn them off if you have to leave the room, even if you are only going to be gone for a few moments.
- Keep clothing, upholstered furniture and draperies away from them.
- Don't use space heaters while you are asleep.
- Invest in space heaters with safety features like automatic shut-off in case they tip over or overheat.
Cigarettes
Use no-tip ashtrays to make sure burning cigarette butts stay where they belong. Don't use makeshift ashtrays - plastic cups, for example. If the material is not fireproof, it might not contain the burning cigarettes safely. Always make sure your cigarette is completely out before you go to sleep.
