General Instructions

Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Project Illustration as guides and adjusting for fit. This project was designed for a patio measuring 147 inches wide and 110 inches deep.

 

1. Add the posts

Note: You’ll need at least two assistants for this step.

a. Lay out and cut the (01) posts and pre-drill holes as shown in Figure 1.

b. Position two (01) posts, spaced 16 inches apart, on each side of the patio. Scribe the positions of the (01) posts and pre-drilled holes.

c. Pre-drill for the 1/2-inch lag shields on each side of the patio at the scribed holes.

d. Attach the (01) posts to the patio using 12-inch carriage bolts and fender washers.

2. Create the four beam assemblies.

a. Lay out and cut the (02) arc beams, (03) lattice and (04) curved beams, and pre-drill holes as shown in Figure 2.

b. On a large flat surface, position four (02) arc beams as shown in the outside face of the beam assembly in Figure 3. Apply glue to the face of each piece.

c. Cut one (02) arc beam in half.

d. Position each half (02) arc beam, two (04) curved beams and one (02) arc beam as shown in the inside face of the beam assembly in Figure 3. Align all edges flush, and attach the outside and inside faces together using two 1/2-inch screws.

e. Repeat steps 2b through d to create three more beam assemblies.

 

3. Attach the beam assemblies.

Note: You’ll need at least three assistants for this step.

a. Position one beam assembly with the outside face positioned backward on the back side of the two front (01) posts, line up the pre-drilled holes, and attach using three 1/2-inch screws.

b. Position a second beam assembly with the outside face positioned forward on the front side of the two front (01) posts, line up the pre-drilled holes and attach using three 1/2-inch screws. Insert the carriage bolts through the pre-drilled holes starting at the front and attach the fender washers and nuts on the back of the assemblies.

c. Repeat to add the remaining two beam assemblies on the two back (01) posts.

4. Add the struts.

Note: You’ll need at least two assistants for this step.

a. Lay out and cut the (05) short struts and (06) long struts, and pre-drill holes as shown in Figures 4 and 5.

b. Position the (05) short struts on the outside edges of the (01) posts as shown in Figure 6. Attach to the (01) posts with 6-inch hex lag screws, and attach to the beam assemblies using 12-inch carriage bolts, washers and nuts.

c. Position the (06) long struts on the inside edges of the (01) posts as shown in Figure 6. Attach to the (01) posts with 8-inch hex lag screws, and attach to the beam assemblies using 12-inch carriage bolts, washers and nuts.

 

5. Add finishing touches.

a. Starting in the center of the assembly, position the (03) lattice parts equidistantly across the top of the beam assemblies, and attach using glue and 3-inch screws.

b. Sand and apply stain.
