Craft Table in Garage

A movable workstation is great for do-it-yourself projects. It also can serve as a food and beverage cart for parties.

General Instructions

Cut and label the parts as needed, using the Cut List and Cutting Diagram as guides and adjusting for fit.

1. Assemble the platform, top and base cabinets.

a. Attach six casters to the (01) platform at the four corners and centered on each outside long edge as shown in Figure 1.

b. Remove the toe-kick portion of the cabinets using a jigsaw, and sand smooth to remove uneven edges.

c. Turn the cabinets upside down, and attach the (01) platform to them using glue and screws. The three outside sides of each cabinet should be flush with the edges of the (01) platform.

d. Place the assembly upright. Center the (02) top on the cabinets, and attach using glue and screws.

2. Cut holes in the top, and add the nosing.

3. Build the paper-holder back/bracket assembly.

a. To create the U-shape form in the (05) brackets, first locate the center of each by drawing diagonal lines from the corners.

b. Using a 1-1/4-inch Forstner bit, drill a 1-1/4-inch hole at the intersection of the diagonal lines for each (05) bracket.

c. Draw vertical lines from the side apexes of the hole to the top edge of the (05) bracket as shown in the side view in Figure 2.

d. Cut out the portion between the lines using a jigsaw.

e. Using glue and screws, attach the left (05) bracket 1 inch from the left side of the (06) back as shown in Figure 3.

f. Using glue and screws, attach the right (05) bracket 3/4 inch from the right side of the (06) back.

4. Build the doughnut/dowel assembly for the paper holder.

a. Note: The (07) doughnut parts are cut from the remaining 1 x 6 stock.

b. Clamp the piece in place, and drill a 3/8-inch-deep hole using a 1-inch Forstner bit. Remove the bit from the hole, and then cut out the (07) doughnut using a 2 1/2-inch hole saw attachment.

c. Clamp the (07) doughnut in place, and finish drilling the 1-inch hole in the center of the (07) doughnut using the 1-inch Forstner bit.

d. Repeat to create a second (07) doughnut.

e. Starting from one end of the (08) dowel, make a mark at 1 inch and 1-7/8 inches for the placements of the (07) doughnuts.

f. Apply glue to the inside of the (07) doughnuts. Slide them onto the (08) dowel with the inside faces positioned at the marks indicated in Step 3d.

g. Drill a pilot hole perpendicular to the grain in each (07) doughnut. Using finishing nails, attach the (07) doughnuts to the (08) dowel as shown in Figure 4. Wipe off any excess glue on the dowel.

5. Apply finishing touches.
