Create a functional centerpiece for your family room.
Assemble the legs and stretchers.
a. Use a router fitted with a 1/4-inch beading bit to cut a bead on three corners of each (01) leg as shown in the (01) leg detail in Figure 1.
b. Miter cut by 3/8 inch the inside corners of the (02) stretchers and the (03) end stretchers.
c. Position the stretchers 3/8 inch from the faces of the (01) legs and 2-1/2 inches from the bottom of the (01) legs as shown in Figure 1. Attach using glue and fine thread pocket hole screws.
Add the dividers, end spacers and inserts.
a. Scribe and cut to length the (04) dividers, and attach the two outside (04) dividers using glue, 6d nails, and fine thread pocket hole screws as shown in Figure 2. Position the remaining (04) divider centered along the centerline of the (02) stretchers, and attach using glue and fine thread pocket hole screws.
b. Position the (05) end spacers flush with the outside edges of the (03) end stretchers as shown in Figure 2, and attach to the (01) legs using glue and 6d nails.
c. Scribe and cut to length the (06) end inserts and the (07) back inserts.
d. Cut a 1/8-inch-deep x 1/16-inch-wide kerf around the perimeter of each insert as shown in the (06) end insert and (07) back insert detail in Figure 2.
e. Attach the (06) end inserts to the (05) end spacers using glue and fine thread pocket hole screws as shown in Figure 2.
f. Attach the (07) back inserts to the (04) dividers using glue and fine thread pocket hole screws.
Attach the lower top and edging.
a. Cut a 1-3/8- x 1-3/8-inch square from each corner of the (08) lower top.
b. Scribe and cut to length the (09) edging and the (10) end edging, and attach the edging to the (08) lower top using glue and 6d nails.
c. Attach the lower top assembly to the base assembly using glue and 6d nails.
Add the aprons.
a. Scribe and cut to length the (11) aprons and the (12) end aprons.
b. Use a router fitted with a 1/4-inch beading bit to cut a bead along the bottom edge of each apron as shown in the apron detail in Figure 4.
c. Predrill for pocket hole screws as shown in Figure 4.
d. Attach the (11) aprons and (12) end aprons using glue and fine thread pocket hole screws as shown in Figure 4.
Construct the top.
a. Cut the (13) top slats and the (14) side slats 1 inch longer than the length provided in the Cut List.
b. On a flat work surface, apply glue to the long edges of the slats, and clamp the pieces together until the glue dries.
c. Cut the glued slat assembly to 42 inches long, squaring the ends.
d. Use a scraper or sander to remove any excess glue.
e. Use a router fitted with a 1/4-inch roundover bit to cut a roundover on the perimeter of the top of the slat assembly.
f. Use a router fitted with a 1/2-inch roundover bit to cut a roundover on the perimeter of the bottom side of the slat assembly.
g. Attach the slat assembly centered on the base assembly using fine thread pocket hole screws only.
Assemble and install the drawers.
a. Assemble each drawer box by attaching the ends to the sides with glue and 1-1/4-inch wire brads. Attach a bottom to each drawer box assembly with glue and 1-1/4-inch wire brads.
Note: Parts (15) through (18) are used to assemble the boxes.
b. Attach the drawer slides following the manufacturer's directions; install the drawers in the openings so that the face of each drawer box is recessed 3/4 inch from the edge of the opening.
c. Measure the drawer opening and cut the (19) drawer faces 1/8 inch less than length and the width of the opening.
d. With the drawer boxes in place, apply double-sided tape to the front of the drawer boxes.
e. Position the (19) drawer faces centered in the opening, and apply pressure to the double-sided tape.
f. Open the drawers, and attach the (19) drawer faces by driving 1-inch lath screws through the inside face of the drawer boxes and into the back of the (19) drawer faces.
g. Following the (20) drawer pull detail in Figure 6, lay out the (20) drawer pull pattern.
h. Use a router fitted with a 1/2-inch cove bit to cut a cove on each (20) drawer pull as shown in the detail in Figure 6.
i. Attach the (20) drawer pulls to the (19) drawer faces using glue and 1-inch wire brads.
Apply finishing touches.
a. Remove the top assembly, fill holes, sand, stain, and apply polyurethane.
b. Fill all holes, sand, prime, and paint the base assembly.
c. After the two sections have dried, reassemble the top and the base assemblies.
d. Attach nail-on furniture glides to the bottoms of the (01) legs.
