  • Sandpaper
  • Hammer
  • Tape measure


  • Hillman Sign Center 2" stencils (#106943)
  • 1/2" x 2' x 4' birch plywood (#6200)
  • Package self-leveling picture hangers (#52716)
  • Valspar spray paint, flat black and flat white

Step 1

Have a Lowe's associate cut your plywood in half; it should measure 2' x 2'.

Step 2

Lightly sand the plywood. Wipe clean with a dry cloth.

Step 3

Apply a coat of black spray paint to the plywood. Let dry. Apply a second coat and let dry.

Step 4

Determine the words you wish to add to your sign (we chose landmarks in Chicago). Lay out the necessary letter stencil sheets on the plywood, row by row.

Step 5

Remove the letter outlines from the stencil sheets and fill them in with two coats of white spray paint.

Step 6

Attach a centered picture hanger to the back of the plywood and hang.
