Instructions

Create the PVC Cubby

Step 1

With a miter saw or handsaw, cut the 4-inch pipe into 12 pieces 7-3/4 inches long. Sand the rough edges smooth and slightly round over the edges on both ends of each piece.

Step 2

Glue tubes side by side

Apply a bead of adhesive the length of one pipe. If you need help following a straight line, use the lettering along the pipe as a guide. On a flat work surface, clamp the pipe to another one with the ends flush. Repeat until you have four pipes in a row.

Step 3

Add a second row of pipes

Begin the next row by gluing and clamping a pipe to one of the end pipes. Use a carpenter’s square to check that the edges are flush both front and back. Continue adding pipes to complete the second row. Repeat for the third row and allow the adhesive to dry.

Step 4

Just inside the front ends, drill 5/32-inch mounting holes through the left side of the top left pipe and left side of the bottom left pipe.

Step 5

Spray three coats of paint (Gloss White shown) on the insides and outsides of the pipe assembly.

Assemble the Shelves

Step 1

Choose a location for the center of the completed project and position the mounting bracket from the 35.4-inch shelf vertically on the wall using a level. Mark the mounting screw locations. If possible, screw the mounting bracket into a stud beneath the drywall. Otherwise, add wall anchors and screw the mounting bracket in place. Slide the shelf onto the mounting bracket.

Step 2

Measure the height of the pipe cubbies and lightly mark the vertical shelf that distance from the bottom end. Slide the mounting bracket about halfway into a 23.6-inch shelf, hold the shelf level, with the bottom edge against the vertical shelf mark, and mark the bracket mounting hole locations on the wall. Add anchors, screw the bracket to the wall, and insert the shelf.

Step 3

Screw the vertical and horizontal shelves together

Drill a pilot hole in the vertical shelf centered along the thickness of the horizontal shelf and drive a screw to join the shelves. Repeat the previous step and this one to install a second 23.6-inch shelf on the left side of the vertical shelf and offset about 4 inches lower than the lower right shelf.

Step 4

Measure 10 inches up from the bottom right shelf and repeat steps 2 and 3 to install the 17.7-inch shelf with the left end screwed to the vertical shelf.

Step 5

Hold the pipe cubby in position against the vertical shelf and bottom right shelf. Mark the mounting hole locations on the vertical shelve. Then mark the wall where the inside tops of the upper left and upper right pipes touch. (These marks should be the same distance beneath the lower right shelf.)

Step 6

Rest a 2-inch corner brace on the wall with one leg pointing down and the top of the other leg just even with a mark on the wall from the previous step. Mark the mounting screw locations, install wall anchors there, and screw the bracket to the wall. Repeat for the other bracket.

Step 7

Cubbies installed on the shelf

Slide the tube assembly into position below the shelf and mark the mounting hole positions on the vertical shelf. Drill 3/32-inch pilot holes in the shelf and screw the pipe assembly to the shelves. Estimated cost: $96.
